Calling all High School Students to Get Organised now to Succeed in 2020!

The New Year is a crazy, busy period for students and parents alike, however, taking the time now to put a few tools in place, will help to set you up for a more organised and successful year ahead.

The Year Planner

At the beginning of each school year, all high school students should be given a booklet which outlines the yearly assessment expectations for every subject that they are taking. (Sometimes it is not a booklet but a page of information given by each teacher.) This may also be published on the school website in either the student or parent portal and can be printed off at home. It is an extremely important document as it provides you with all the information you will need to plan ahead. If you don’t get one, ask your year advisor about it.

Using an A4 sized Year Planner divided into 4 columns of 10 week sections, (one for each term), fill in all assessment details in the appropriate weeks. Generally but not always, there is one assessment task for each subject, each term. By colour-coding each subject with highlighters, you can clearly view exactly what is due for the whole year ahead. Then add the details to your paper or electronic diary so that there are never any last minute dramas! You will be aware ahead of time when a task is coming up, and will know two weeks ahead of the due date to expect a notification.

Keep in mind that schools do sometimes make changes to this schedule, nevertheless, it serves as a good guide to show you when your busier times will be, so that you can prepare for them. Print off a copy for your parents and your tutor, so that we can help you to plan ahead. (You can obtain your Year Planner templet at NEC. Just ask your tutor.)

The Maths Scope and Sequence Chart

This is a one page document that all maths teachers have, but do not all hand out. If you are not given one you must ask your teacher for a copy of theirs. It outlines what chapters are to be covered each term and usually indicates when the assessment tasks are happening. Print this off and have it for your own reference. Please pass on a copy to your tutor so that we can also plan ahead.

These are the first two important steps to take to start the year prepared. Keep posted for more tips!
